Studying International Law at the University of Vienna

The Juridicum has developed a new law degree programme: International Legal Studies. The first students started in October 2021.

The idea: Europeanization and globalization have long since taken hold in legal practice, and they will play an even greater role in the future. This offers great opportunities for future lawyers, and the faculty wants to prepare them specifically for this.

The University: The Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna (the "Juridicum") is one of the leading law faculties in Europe and the world. International rankings show this year after year. From an international perspective, the faculty occupies a unique position in Austria and is one of the handful of German-speaking faculties that can keep up with the European and global competition in research and teaching. The reason for this: international topics in research and teaching, professors with extensive international professional experience, a wide range of courses in foreign languages, all with an unconditional commitment to excellence.

The offer: The Bachelor's (LL.B.) and Master's (LL.M.) degree programes in "International Legal Studies" offer a full-fledged education for lawyers. This means that graduates can enter any legal profession with their Master's degree - just like with their previous law degree: lawyers, justice, notaries, companies, NGOs, administration, etc. But: In addition, graduates are made fit for a European and international future. The course is primarily aimed at interested parties (high school graduates) who want to study law and work internationally in the future, be it in an international organization, in an international law firm, as a corporate lawyer with an international focus, or who are simply interested in cross-border and international issues. English skills at (at least) level B2 are required. The offer is also aimed at interested parties from abroad, provided that they have German language skills at level C1 and are at least potentially aiming for a future job with an Austrian connection. Students who are already studying law at the Juridicum or another university can in principle switch to the IREWI course or study IREWI in parallel. In order to be admitted to the IREWI Bachelor's degree - regardless of the progress of the course - participation in the admission procedure is required. From winter semester 2022/23, admission to the Master's degree will be possible.

The path: A comprehensive range of international law subjects and foreign language courses, some of which are compulsory in English - around 40% of all courses and exams in the Bachelor's programme, and significantly more than half in the Master's programme. In addition, there are of course subjects in Austrian law, which are an indispensable part of any full legal education.

Überschneidungen zwischen dem Bachelorstudium IREWI und dem Diplomstudium betragen 106 ECTS. Die Überschneidung zwischen dem Masterstudium IREWI und dem Diplomstudium betragen 45ECTS.

The choice: Since the 2021/22 academic year, students have been able to choose between the traditional diploma course in law (four-year master's degree) and the new bachelor's and then master's degree in "International Legal Studies" (three plus two years). There are 1,700 places available for the traditional diploma course and 200 places for the new international bachelor's degree. There is an admission procedure for both courses, but the admission exams take place separately.
